Allium Sconce — 3D Printed Wall Light with Layered Glow

Wall mounting suits this design better than a table or a ceiling does. A sconce is seen from a narrow band of angles as people move past it along a wall, and the layered shell is built to change exactly across that range — the inner form emerging and receding as your position shifts.

Two printed shells make it work. The inner layer takes a rounded, onion-like shape with a matte finish; the outer shell is calibrated to be subtly translucent. Lit, the inner form registers as a silhouette suspended inside the outer surface, defined from some positions and dissolved from others.

The result on a wall is depth rather than a flat lit panel. Most sconces read as a bright shape against a surface; this one has interior structure you can see into, which gives it presence when unlit as well.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

• Dust with a soft dry cloth or low-pressure air duster, working around the layered shells
• Do not use water, solvents, or chemical cleaners on the printed material
• Avoid abrasive cloths, which can scuff the matte inner finish
• Keep away from heat sources and prolonged direct sunlight — printed material can soften or warp at high temperatures
• Turn off and allow to cool before cleaning
• Use LED bulbs to limit heat against the printed shade
• Check mounting hardware periodically for loosening

HOW TO STYLE IT

Sconces work in pairs or runs more often than singly. Two flanking a bed, a mirror, or a fireplace give you symmetry; three or four spaced evenly along a hallway give you rhythm and enough light to walk by without a ceiling fixture.

Mounting height matters. Beside a bed, roughly shoulder height when seated keeps the glow below eye level and clear of your sightline when reading. In a hallway, around 60 to 66 inches from the floor is standard, though lower reads more intimate.

Because the effect depends on movement, hallways and stairwells suit this better than a static corner — you get the shifting inner form every time someone walks past. Give it a plain wall so the layered structure registers without competition.
