Lotus Lamp – Contemporary Designer Lighting

The shade reverses. Flip it and the light throws upward, washing a ceiling and filling a room with indirect ambient glow; flip it back and the light directs down, concentrating on the surface below for reading or task work. One lamp covering two lighting functions that usually require two fixtures.

The form is layered and rippling, built from concentric stepped bands that read as fluid despite being constructed from discrete geometric planes. That tension between structure and flow is what the design is doing — clean geometry arranged into something that moves. It works from any angle, which matters for a lamp that gets physically turned over as part of normal use.

Produced through 3D printing, with slight variation in texture and tone between pieces inherent to the process. Designed in collaboration with Jason Wu Bergeron.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

• Dust with a soft dry cloth or low-pressure air duster, working between the layered bands
• Do not use water, solvents, or chemical cleaners on the printed surface
• Avoid abrasive cloths, which can scuff the printed finish
• Unplug and let the bulb cool fully before reversing the shade
• Keep away from heat sources and prolonged direct sunlight
• Use LED bulbs to limit heat against the printed material

HOW TO STYLE IT

Choose the orientation for the room rather than leaving it in one position. Shade up is the setting for a bedroom or a living room in the evening — indirect light off a ceiling reads softer and fills a space more evenly than a downward source. Shade down is the setting for a desk, a reading chair, or a bedside table where you actually need light on a surface.

That flexibility means placement is less constrained than with a fixed lamp. In a home office it works pointed down during the day and reversed for evening. In a bedroom, downward beside a bed for reading and upward when the room needs ambient light rather than a reading spot.

The layered form has enough detail that it competes with busy surroundings. A clear surface — a bare console, a desk with room around it, a bedside table with nothing else on it — lets the concentric bands register. Position it clear of a wall in the upward orientation so the ceiling wash has room to spread.
