Portico Hanging Planter — Handmade Stoneware Ceramic with Drainage
Most hanging planters solve for looks and leave drainage as an afterthought, which is why so many indoor plants die of root rot in attractive pots. This one has drainage built into the form rather than added to it, so water clears the root zone without needing a saucer underneath or a plastic nursery pot hidden inside.
It's made by hand from stoneware ceramic in a Milwaukee studio. Stoneware is denser and less porous than earthenware, which means it holds up to repeated watering without the surface degrading or the body absorbing moisture over time. Because each piece is thrown and finished individually, small variations in form and glaze are inherent to the process rather than defects.
The silhouette is minimal and vertically compact at 7.5 inches tall, sized for trailing plants and small foliage rather than anything with a substantial root ball. It reads as a quiet object on a hook or a rail, not a statement piece.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- Wipe the exterior with a soft damp cloth; dry immediately
- Do not put in the dishwasher
- Avoid abrasive cleaners and scouring pads, which can scratch the glaze
- Do not expose to freezing temperatures — ceramic can crack when trapped moisture freezes
- Handle with care when repotting; ceramic can chip at the rim if knocked
- Check the hanging hardware and mounting point periodically, particularly after watering when the planter is heaviest
HOW TO STYLE IT
At 7.5 inches this is sized for trailing plants — string of pearls, pothos, small ivy, or a compact fern. Anything with a vigorous root system will outgrow it. Hang it where the trailing growth has room to fall clear of furniture and traffic: beside a window, at the end of a shelf run, or from a ceiling hook in a corner.
Handmade ceramic reads best when it's not competing with other handmade objects in the same sightline. Give it a plain background — a white wall, a window frame, a run of open shelving — and let the glaze variation register. Group two or three at staggered heights if you want more presence, but keep the plants varied so the arrangement doesn't read as repetition.
Because the drainage is integrated, this works in rooms where a dripping planter would be a problem — over a desk, above a seating area, in a bedroom — without needing a tray underneath.
