Ruff Lamp — 3D Printed Ruffled Table Lamp with Sculptural Collar Shade

The shade is a ruff collar — the stiff pleated linen ring worn at the neck across 17th-century Europe, rendered here as a lampshade. Deep undulating waves radiate from the center, folding back on themselves at the outer edge the way starched linen does when it's been shaped by hand.

It's an unusual reference for lighting and it works because the original object was already sculptural. A ruff was structure worn for its own sake, engineered from flat cloth into a three-dimensional form with no function beyond its shape. Translated to a shade, that logic holds: the waves create depth and shadow across the surface, and the silhouette reads as an object rather than as a cover for a bulb.

Lit, the folds do what folded fabric does — light catches the crest of each wave and falls away into the trough behind it, so the shade shows a gradient of light and shadow around its full circumference rather than glowing evenly.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

• Dust with a low-pressure air duster rather than a cloth — deep folds trap dust and fabric can catch on the wave edges
• Do not use water, solvents, or chemical cleaners on the printed surface
• Avoid abrasive cloths, which can scuff the raised wave crests
• Keep away from heat sources and prolonged direct sunlight
• Unplug and let the bulb cool fully before cleaning
• Handle by the base rather than the shade when repositioning

HOW TO STYLE IT

This is a shape with an opinion, so give it space. On a console with nothing else on it, or a side table where it's the only object, the silhouette registers fully. Crowd it and the wave detail turns into visual clutter.

The historical reference cuts both ways in placement. In a maximalist or eclectic room it reads as one more considered object among many. In a strictly minimal interior it becomes the single decorative element, which is a stronger result — the contrast between a spare room and an ornate shade is more interesting than putting ornament next to ornament.

Position it clear of a wall. The wave crests throw distinct shadow, and a nearby surface catches it.

Pair with plain materials — flat painted walls, solid ceramics, unfigured wood. Keep other ruffled, fluted, or pleated pieces out of the same sightline, including the Wavy and Kinoko lamps.
